Technology
The Pulse System utilises a number of complementary technologies, provided by the Progress Software Corporation and CorVu.
The following diagram outlines the architecture of the Pulse System and the various technologies.
Progress
The Pulse System is developed using the Progress suite of products as the platform. Progress is a company focused on providing leading-edge technologies. The Progress components and tools provide a strong foundation and offer a path into the future that allows us to concentrate on building and maintaining our systems. The Pulse System takes full advantage of the Progress database engine, AppServer and WebSpeed components.
Progress Database Engine
The Progress Relational Database Management System (RDBMS) is a fourth-generation SQL compliant database. It will support over 10,000 concurrent users and numerous terabytes of data.
The Progress databases are often transparent to your IT staff and require dramatically less maintenance than similar database engines. Progress' unparalleled reliability minimises the cost and complexity of database management and tuning. We provide complete database management services.
The Progress RDBMS has open-client interfaces, including ODBC, JDBC, and ESQL. This allows easy access to the data by third-party tools.
Progress AppServer
The AppServer technology allows our solutions to run over a network without degrading the performance of the system.
Many applications will request large amounts of data to be manipulated and displayed, which can take time over slow connections. The AppServer runs all of the business logic and data handling on the system server - only the essential data is sent to the user, reducing demand and overheads on the network.
The AppServer helps balance the application load by scheduling and dispatching the workload on the server. This allows a rich GUI front-end to be used and connected over a network to the back-end system and database without significant performance degradation.
Progress WebSpeed
WebSpeed allows a standard web browser to be used as a front end into a Progress system.
It provides a simple interface which is typically used by those users not requiring access to the core systems, for example to approve requisitions. The intuitive interface ensures minimal training is required for these parts of the system.
CorVu
CorVu is a widely used leading-edge reporting system. Its extensive "drill down" capabilities allow a user to see information at a summary level and then to drill down as far as individual transaction detail.
To assist our clients we provide a Knowledge Library when they implement CorVu. This Knowledge Library provides a window into our database, mapping our internal tables and fields into a structure that is easily understood and useable.
CorVu can be used to provide shift, daily, weekly and monthly management reports, as well as being an online tool to actively investigate trends and snapshots of current situations.
CorVu also allows reports and information to be published as web pages. Additionally, interactive reports can be published on the web, so that people using a web browser can view reports and utilise drill-down capabilities for further analysis.
Interfaces
Over time we have created interfaces to numerous other information systems. These include Tritronics, Modular Mining and Citect.
These interfaces allow the Pulse System to automatically obtain information as an alternative to manual entry of data. Conversely, the Pulse System can export data to other, specialised systems.
